Hi everybody!
Escuse me but I don't speak Danish so I write in English. I am a french guy and I am in Brande for 6 months in order to do an engineering internship.
I am fond of metal detection in France and I take my detector with me (a Xp Goldmaxx Power if you know).
My first question is : "Is there any specific laws around my area?" In any case I am going to ask for that at the municipality building of Brande very soon.
I visited a little bit the landscapes around Brande and I was suprised : I have not found any old forrest with old trees, is it normal? I mean that in France I am used to go there and it is often a good place for detection.
So, have you some tips to find good spots? I notice that there is some rivers and I think it will be interesting to go across them but their access is not easy. Have I to go in the fields (with the permission of the owner)?
Lastly, have you some ideas of good areas around Brande (I have my own car) to do metal detection?
I am especially interested in finding old coins of all periods.

Best regards,

Benji
The area around Brande was heathland until some time at the end of the 19th century so that's why you don't find any old forests.
hello Benji,

The rules are as Brian mentioned, only beach is pretty ok without a permission and so far it has been the only place I ve tried to detect with poor results...

Wouldnt really like to hijack your topic here, but I live in Janderup close Varde - Brande is like 70 km away, so if you re getting bored once on a weekend, we can always try to arrange something together (I'm am pretty new to this hobby and actually looking for someone experienced to show me some more around metal detecting, so I hope it might be fun). I am using Minelab Xterra 30. Also, even though I am foreigner here myself, I speak Danish so we could try to get a farmer permission to search on his fields or something...

Just drop me a line if it is of any interest to you.

kind regards
Pawel
[/quote1233942440]

Hello Brian and Jacob

Thank you for your fast answers!
Jakob, I didn't know that about the area around Brande...It means that there is no real reason to find old coins here? Actually, if there was only heathland until the end of the 19th century, the area doesn't seem very interesting. So, could you give me so advice to find a good area no so far of Brande where there is a historical interest? (I mean in a periphery of 50Km).
In this way, could you give me some websites or book references to know further about the Danish history in Judland?
Brian, the law is little bit different in France. Actually, it is more strict. However it is quite impossible to follow exactly the french law...So metal detection is tolerate in private lands with the permission of the owner. Actually, you can keep all your objects unless you find a treasure:) But some french archeologists think that we have to declare all our discoveries...So it is a little bit more complicated:) Metal detection on french beaches are allowed but some municipalities have specific laws.
In any case, you can't detect near historical monuments in France.

Best regards,

Benjamin

hi again,

I come from Poland, came here to Denmark in '06.

No problems, lets keep in touch, then we can perhaps find a place somewhere around here or Brande, doesn't matter for me, I have a car too, so I can come to Brande or anywhere else. As for the timing, this and next weekend I ll be busy actually looking for a new car, so perhaps in 3 - 4 weeks time from now on we can find something out. We can use the time to find an interesting spot here on Jutland (same time it s still pretty cold outside most of the time now, so I am not sure if any attempts to excavate still icy cold ground makes sense).
I didn t have much time recently to look around for a place here, as I have just moved here few months ago from Copenhagen. Yet, I did find a website on Danish military history describing briefly some wars and battles (moslty 17-19 centuries), which could maybe give some indications for further research, it s in English you can check it out yourself here http://www.milhist.dk/index_uk.php. Perhaps finding a spot of an old military camp site or something similar might give some interesting results.

have a good weekend
Pawel
I think it would be rare to find anything from the Medieval period up until the late 19th century but as the heathland became heathland because of human agriculture the should be a decent chance of finding something really old.

Normally I would suggest using the webpage http://www.dkconline.dk where you find archeological finds plotted on maps but it's all in Danish.
Brande has been on the map for about 800 years (the church is from the mid 1100's), showing that the town has some history dating back to the late viking age, early middle ages. It is in fact one of the oldest towns in central Jutland. Like many towns, it's had its ups and downs. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Brande consisted of not much more than a church with associated graveyard, the vicarage and the Inn. Since then, it has grown considerably, together with the neighbouring town Ikast, mainly due to the textile industry.

On this map you can see a triangle, numbered 312. Brande Kommune have plans on developing an area of about 10,700 m2. Herning Museum would like to make an evaluation of this area, prior to the heavy machinery moving in. I don't know if they have allready done this- but maybe you could contact the museum, and ask them if they would like you to 'skim' the area with a detector, to see if anything of interest should pop up. Most museums would welcome such an initiative. Anyway, it's worth a try. As the bulk of the area is sports fields, it'll be nice and flat, making for good detecting.. You must of course get permission from Brande Kommune (try the Stadsgartner, who is responsible for the 'green' areas), after you hopefully get a positive response from the museum.
[br][link=http://www.detekt.dk/sdf/e107_files/public/1234213265_46_FT8477_brande.jpg][img:width=400&height=362]http://www.detekt.dk/sdf/e107_files/public/1234213265_46_FT8477_brande_.jpg[/img][/link][br]
It's a nice find and I would guess quite common as a detector find in Denmark. Others will know better how common or uncommon it is.
Good find Ben! "dolphins" of most small denominations are quite common as a group, at least in the northern part of the country. The 1904 10 öre is not too common, though.
Captainben wrote:

"I am surprised because it is the same kind of coin but the older is in bad condition.....what does it mean?"

The reason for the different conditions might be very simple: Since the coins were found in the same hole, one could realistically assume that they were lost at the same time. This could very well be a short time after 1904, since the “dolphins" were replaced by other coins in 1907. This means that the 1904 10-øre had been circulating for only a few years when being lost. The 1874 10-øre, on the other hand, had been part of the trade for 30 years or more.

Therefore the older coin is in a bad condition and the younger one in a much better condition. :)
